How to Live Bedridden with Chronic Illness

Being stuck in bed is no fun for anybody but it’s especially frustrating if you have a chronic illness and have to spend almost all your time in bed. This was the case for me. I had fibromyalgia, but it wasn’t bad enough that I couldn’t function. However, in 2005 the unthinkable happened and landed me flat on my back for 12 years. We were involved in a severe auto/semi accident that left me with severe fibromyalgia and injuries so devastating that I spend the next 12 years in bed trying to figure out how to get out.

I learned a lot about having nothing but time to kill. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever been through. Staring at the same four walls all day, looking forward to little but your next meal and meds, so the pain might ease up slightly, is not fun. However, as I was stuck there, I found things to make it a little easier. If you find yourself in that same situation I thought I would give you a list of things I found to pass the time and make living the horizontal life as bearable and easy as possible.

Netflix can be a lifesaver when you’ve got time to kill

Books reading helps you lose yourself in a story like nothing else 

iPad a must have! Easy to handle, so functional, easy to use

Take an imagination vacation, let your mind take you anywhere in the world

Become a World Explorer with Google Earth

Participate in micro-volunteering. Change the world from bed

Listen to audio books

Plan a dream vacation

Take free classes on line, we love Coursera, Duolingo, Skillshare

Practice yoga in bed, yes you can do Yoga in bed

Become a bird watcher you just need a window and binoculars 

Write letters, a lost art that will cheer someone else up

Write, a book, screenplay, short stories

Listen to the music

Puzzles, word puzzles, jigsaws on a tray

Crafting, painting, adult color books, I still love kids color books!

Take online college courses

Do your DNA and research your family history

Knitting, crochet, cross stitch (I love counted Cross stitch, see the cross stitch I did while bedridden for 12years below)

Dress up your bed as beautiful as you can. I beautiful linens, lots of throw pillows, cushions, bolsters, and a wedge (I used a wedge to lay back but not be flat after the wreck when my sternum was broken and I couldn’t lay flat

Redecorate with new comforter, blankets and wall hangings

Decorate yourself, play with make up styles, henna, hair colors or glitter

Paint a picture

Write a poem, or read poetry 

Write a book

Try Journaling

Start a blog (you can do one for free at WordPress)

Try meditation

Spend time with Pets, playing with them, talking to them. Maybe yours or someone else’s

Sing or learn sign language and sing in sign

Make yourself a Self-Care Kit to dive in to, and ward off the blues with self-care items, fun things to do, crafts, gift cards to treat yourself

Get a pen pal

Make your own greeting cards 

Try scrap booking

Start an online support group

Tell stories, from traditions, from childhood, from fairy tales, from your imagination

Connect to positive online communities and hang out, support others

Try exercising in bed

Enjoy the mobile library – ask your local library if they have a home delivery service for people who are housebound.

Learn origami and make objects to decorate the space above your bed

Close your eyes, listen to music and let it paint a picture in your head
